community will make plans to attend the reception, football game and
induction ceremony.
"This is a great way to honor outstanding athletes that helped build our Blue Comet legacy of excellence," said Dr. Brian Toth, AHS principal. "It is important for our young athletes to see how the impact of what they accomplish today has the potential to live on throughout history."
The AHS Sports Hall of Fame is a project of the Asheboro High School in Cooperation with the Asheboro Blue Comet Booster's Club. A permanent "Honor Roll" of inductees will be located in the lobby of the new gym and a plaque will be presented to the inductee (or designee) at a home football game.
The 1986 Baseball Team, 3-A State Champions:
Asheboro High School's baseball team swept South Iredell 2-0 in the best of three series to claim the 1986 3-A State Championship. Timely pitching from Chris Jones, Brian Hayes and Tony Coble and solid play from seniors Jay Foscue, Darrin Floyd, Maurice Butler and others propelled the Blue Comets to a 25-3 record during the 1986 season. Other team members included Philip Perdue, Patrick Dees, Kyle Smith, Mark Shiflet, Phillip Floyd, Stewart Roberts, Robbie Hammonds, Keith Smith, Kent Lewis and Ryan Hammonds. Toby Coble was named Most Valuable Player of the 1986 State Tournament. Asheboro began the season with a 4-3 record and went on to win 21 games straight. Head coach Martin Smith was assisted by Tony McKee and Gary Martin. Coach Smith said, "No doubt there's some excellent talent on this club, but it's hard to measure heart and we've got plenty of that."
Mark Sink, Class of 1966:
Mark Sink was an exceptional football and baseball player in the 1960s at AHS. The 1966 Blue Comet graduate was a starting halfback for the football team in 1964 and '65 and an All-State centerfielder on the 1966 baseball team. Mark was also a member of the 1966 State Championship American Legion Post 45 team. He went on to play baseball at Gardner-Webb College and was named to the 1968 National Junior College Athletic Association All-American team. Sink continued his baseball career at Pembroke University. He was recruited by the California Angels but declined a signing bonus to complete his degree. Upon graduation from Pembroke, Sink played baseball in Virginia's Valley League until an injury ended his career. He currently serves as the pastor of Lankford Memorial Baptist Church in Greensboro. Mark and his wife Sally live in Thomasville.
Chuckie Simmons, Class of 1987:
Chuckie Simmons is one of the most decorated track athletes to have walked the halls of Asheboro High School. During his high school career, he was a two-time All-American in track, 1986 3-A State Champion in the 100-meter dash, and was a member of the 1987 3-A State Champion 4 x 200 relay team. Simmons was also an All-Conference running back for the Asheboro High School football team. Upon graduation, Simmons attended St. Augustine's University where he was a member of the 4 x 100 Division II National Championship relay team. He continued his collegiate career at North Carolina State University. At N.C. State, Simmons won conference championships in both indoor and outdoor long jump events. His performances at N.C. State still rank in the top 25 in school history in the 55 and 100 meter races, the 4 x 100 meter relay, and long jump events. Simmons is head coach of the South Asheboro Middle School track team and he works with local athletes as a track and speed training coach.
